Upcoming festivals: Float away your troubles with Loy Kratong!!
In Thai “Loy” means “ To Float” and “Kratong” literally means a “Lotus-shaped banana leaf boat”! The Loy
Kratong festival is well-known among locals for its release of lanterns to the sky and “Kratong” into the sea,
river or any water way. Normally the making of a Kratong is done with banana leaves and then decorated
with colorful flowers, candles and incense. Some people also put small amounts of money and even some
of their own hair onto the Kratong, pray and then release it to the water. The people of Thailand believe that
when praying with the Kratong and releasing it in this way that it shows respect to the goddess of water and
also floats away the bad things that are currently in your life with the river.
Loy Kratong is normally held on the night of the full moon of the 12th lunar month according to the Thai
calendar. This
year, it falls on November 21st. Are you planning your trip to Thailand for this beautiful
festival? Looking for a
soft-adventure nature tourafter the celebration? Then please visit

Elephant Hills River Cleaning!
For the past few years Elephant Hills has initiated many environmental
and social projects that aim at enhancing the surrounding environment
and helping the community of Khao Sok. This month Elephant Hills
together with our new guides, tour leaders and management undertook
a river cleaning operation. When the monsoon rains start the Sok river
swells, rising by as much as 10 meters it can be very powerful. It can
also bring with it unwanted trash and plastic from neighboring towns
and districts washed into the river by rain which causes huge
environmental problems as the plastics and trash enters the local
environment and affects the local wildlife and fishing. To tackle this we
have undertaken 2 river cleaning runs in the past month to collect and
recycle the non-degradable waste.
Camp Manager Khun Wan says she was happy with the results and
hopes that future rains will bring less and less trash to the area.
Elephant Hills is also encouraging local school children to pay more
attention to their environment through childrens activity days and events
supported by the company.
