Coronation Day: May 5th
May the 5th will see the celebrations for His Majesty The King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s coronation celebration. It has been an incredible 61 years since His Majesty’s coronation in 1950. His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej is the ninth King of the Chakri Dynasty and the day of his coronation is a public holiday throughout the kingdom.
Prior to the reign of King Rama IV (King Mongkut), there was in fact no public coronation ceremony in Thailand, there was only a private ceremony held by high ranking officials to celebrate their Royal Regalia and positions |
in the 6th lunar month. A coronation ceremony, however, took place for the first time when King Rama IV was crowned on 15 May 1851.
During the reign of the present king, the ceremony is performed for three days. The first day falls on 3 May where the king will perform a merit-making ceremony at the Audience Hall of Amarindra in dedication to former kings while Buddhist monks chant and offer a sermon. On the 4th May, the Coronation Ceremonies begin with the proclamation of the Coronation Day read by the Chief of Brahmin priests followed by an evenings chanting performed by Buddhist monks. Finally, the 5th of May is the actual date of the ceremony in which food is to be offered to monks and followed by a celebration of the Royal Regalia. At noon the Army and Navy fire a 21-gun salute in honor of the king. On this day, His Majesty the King will also present Royal decorations to people who have made a valuable contribution to the country. |

The Royal Ploughing Ceremony on May the 13th
This ancient tradition dates back to the days when Thailand’s capital city was situated in Sukhothai, it marks the beginning of the planting season throughout rural and agricultural Thailand. The Ceremony is now held in Sanam Luang close to the center of Bangkok and consists of 2 royal Oxen pulling a golden plough through as rice seeds are scattered to symbolize the start of the season.
The Highlight of the ceremony is when the royal Oxen are offered food in different bowls. Based on what they choose to eat will predict the fortunes for that year’s crop. At the end of the ceremony spectators traditionally scramble onto the field to pick up the royal grain used in the ploughing ceremony. The lucky ones will then return with the grain to their own rice field, mix with their own grain and sow ensuring a productive year!
